Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA)

The Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) is a self-regulating body of letting agents. For the past 25 years, ARLA has promoted high standards in residential lettings and property management. ARLA is very highly respected and is considered an authority in the private rented sector. ARLA has the strictest entry requirements of all the letting agent accreditaton schemes.

Why should landlords use an ARLA letting agent?

In the UK, anyone can start a business trading as a letting agent. This means that quality of service provided by to landlords by the letting industry can vary widely. Most letting agents operate honest and knowledgeable businesses, but some do not. Using an ARLA letting agent gives landlords the peace of mind that they are using a company that has met the strict criteria for ARLA membership.

ARLA members have to demonstrate to ARLA that they are meeting the highest standards in the private rental sector and must work within a strict Code of Practice. There are membership byelaws which cover the handling and accounting for client money, the mandatory ARLA Client Money Protection Bonding Scheme, professional indemnity insurance and complaints and disciplinary procedures.

The National Approved Letting Scheme (NALS)

The National Approved Letting Scheme (NALS) is a self-regulatory licensing body for letting agents. Landlords using a letting agent that is licensed by NALS have the peace of mind that the agent has to meet particular standards of customer service, have a formal complaints procedure offering independent redress, and have insurance in place to protect clients’ money.

The Property Ombudsman - Lettings

Letting Agents who are members of The Property Ombudsman Scheme for lettings work in accordance with the scheme’s Code of Practice for Letting Agents. This sets out the standards of service that landlords and tenants can expect from their letting agent.

If a landlord or tenant feels that they have a complaint which has not been resolved by using the letting agent’s own complaints procedure, the Ombudsman can offer help to resolve the dispute.
